Project Overview

Commercial Estates Group Limited (CEG) hired Standing Space to design a show suite at 196 Deansgate in Manchester. From the beginning, our team decided to incorporate the building's remarkable heritage features, such as metal riveted steel columns, exposed brickwork, safe doors, sash windows, and fireplaces.

The floor was divided into different work areas, including desking, team spaces, quiet zones, and soft seating. We also designed and created a suite of meeting rooms and a unique "workspitality" breakout space, which overlooks Deansgate and provides a restaurant-like atmosphere within the office. Contract Services R&R Ltd. completed the fit-out of the workspace.

Oh yes, it is a commercial interiors showstopper!

Building History

The Grade 2 Edwardian listed building, which was introduced in 1908 as the Royal London Friendly Society, holds a unique historical significance. The Royal London Buildings were erected as part of a facade of respectability, strategically designed to conceal one of the most impoverished districts in Manchester—the region nestled between Deansgate and the River Irwell. This building not only serves as a testament to the architectural heritage of its time but also reflects the contrasting facets of Manchester's history, where opulence and need existed side by side.

Design Challenges

The freedom to create a space based on a generic brief is always tricky. However, on this project, I think everyone would agree that Standing Space excelled. We certainly received great feedback from the letting agents at the launch party.
